Green Intelligence - straight to your inbox

We’ve been publishing Green Intelligence for over a decade, helping businesses understand environmental business news and how this may affect costs, compliance, resilience and growth opportunities. This month’s Green Intelligence brings together the stories that matter most for businesses looking to reduce risk, respond to change and make the most of emerging trends.

Rising costs and climate risk are pushing sustainability up the agenda

The sustainability agenda this month is being shaped by three linked themes: the rising cost of energy and carbon exposure for businesses, the growing urgency of climate adaptation, and stronger expectations around credible net-zero action.

Energy costs are now a competitiveness issue

Business energy costs are increasingly being framed as a barrier to UK growth and decarbonisation. A joint report from CBI and Energy UK argues that cutting electricity costs could unlock more than £130bn in additional UK economic output by 2050, with reforms including removing policy costs from business bills, reducing system costs and supporting SMEs to electrify.

This reinforces the importance of practical energy-efficiency, electrification and cost-saving support for businesses.

Climate extremes are a business resilience issue

The Met Office’s latest State of the UK Climate report says climate extremes are becoming the UK’s new normal, with 2025 confirmed as the warmest year on record and heatwaves, drought risk and shifting rainfall patterns becoming more common. The UK has been tackling extreme heat, wildfires and parts of England are at risk of drought in the coming month

For businesses, this strengthens the case for climate adaptation planning, resilience to heat and flooding, sustainable water management and investment in cooling and energy-efficiency measures.

Carbon exposure is becoming a trade risk

British firms could face up to £800m in EU carbon taxes by 2030 unless the UK secures an exemption from the EU’s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism. The UK Trade and Business Commission highlight that carbon policy is becoming a growing trade and competitiveness issue, particularly for manufacturers and exporters. Businesses may increasingly need to measure, report and reduce emissions to protect market access and manage future costs.

Credible net zero action is becoming more standardised

A new international net zero standard, ISO 14060, has opened for public consultation and aims to create a globally recognised benchmark for credible climate action. The draft standard focuses on measurable transition plans, transparent reporting, accountability and limits on the use of carbon offsets. If adopted widely, it could increase demand for carbon footprinting, transition planning, emissions reduction projects and independent verification support.

What this means for businesses

The common thread across these stories is that sustainability is becoming increasingly practical, commercial and immediate. Businesses concerned about resilience and growth should consider their emissions, climate risk and how to demonstrate credible progress against carbon reduction plans.
