A new service has been launched by the Growth Company to support the national ambition to become Net Zero by 2050.
The service, which is led by the team behind GC Business Growth Hub’s Green Technologies and Services programme, will connect suppliers of net zero products and services with buyers through an online Marketplace and Sales Hub that will increase the competitiveness of the sector.
What Green Economy offers
Green Economy brings together a team that brokered £6m of green sales, working with major buyers including Eon, Electricity North West and Greater Manchester Combined Authority, as well as a host of SME buyers.
The Marketplace will demonstrate the capability of the sector by providing an online directory of suppliers and their products and services. Additional services include a Sales Hub which will promote sales and market opportunities, whilst providing tailored support which will aid suppliers and buyers through the procurement process.
Green Economy launched with the “Growing the Green Economy – an untapped opportunity” paper which explores the national potential of the sector. The report found that in Greater Manchester businesses within the sector generated sales of £8.644bn in 2019/20, accounting for 3,144 companies and 58,736 full-time employees, with a sector that is larger than those in Berlin, Rome and Stockholm.
Speaking at the launch event on Tuesday 28 June 2022, Amy House, Director of Green Economy said:
“In Greater Manchester, the green economy is growing faster than the national growth rate and the sector is the third largest contributor to the local economy. This highlights the huge potential and opportunity the sector can leverage, if it can overcome some of the key barriers it faces.
“We have worked hand in glove with these businesses over the past decade and we know that they need greater access to market opportunities. With the launch of Green Economy we hope to mitigate this challenge by providing a single destination for green installers and providers to promote their business, that will in turn give buyers confidence and accessibility to this thriving sector.
“Delivering net zero requires significant change to how business and consumers behave, but we’ve reached a tipping point whereby if we don’t act now, it simply won’t be possible to achieve the ambitions set out by global leaders. I am hugely excited to be launching one of the solutions to this challenge, whilst simultaneously raising the prospects for innovative local suppliers.”
Mark Hughes, Chief Executive of the Growth Company said:
“By investing in Green Economy we’re providing a real and tangible solution to the transition to net zero for businesses across our region who have the aims but not the means to achieve the shift. We already have a strong track record in delivering this support in Greater Manchester, and with Green Economy we’re now in a position to expand our offer to other regions and support the move to net zero.”
