Businesses in 128 postcodes across all 10 Greater Manchester districts could generate extra revenue this spring by shifting their energy use at certain times.

The region’s power network operator, Electricity North West, is launching its latest ‘electricity flexibility’ campaign and has teamed up with Greater Manchester’s ‘Bee Net Zero’ partnership to promote the initiative as part of its ‘Flex and Save’ Campaign.

Paul George, distribution system operation commercial lead at Electricity North West, said: “Traditionally distribution network operators have built more infrastructure to meet growing demand.

“Our approach is for businesses, in key locations where there are constraints on the network, to work with us and earn money for altering their electricity usage at peak times.

“This partnership ensures the network remains resilient, reliable and meets customers' needs, while also being cheaper, less disruptive and reducing carbon emissions – all while seeing local businesses benefit financially – it’s a win-win.”

By reducing energy usage at peak times, investing in energy efficiency, or using onsite renewables to unlock more capacity for the grid, businesses could earn financial rewards while doing their bit for the environment.

‘Electricity flexibility services’ are only offered in certain locations where demand is highest. Companies who can generate more or consume less energy when needed will benefit most financially.

Paul added: “We’re looking for up to 550 MW of capacity which sounds like a lot, but with multiple businesses taking part the amount of flexibility your business can offer can vary. The team is on hand to offer support and guidance on how to participate.  We’re committed to ensuring our flexibility services are inclusive and accessible to all businesses regardless of sector and size”.
